The Reign Of Terror
The Reign Of Terror Throughout time, people have always been able to survive by using the things around them in innovative ways. Their cultures have also greatly influenced them. Whatever was happening at the time, they had to react and adapt their lifestyles. These changes almost always led to new inventions such as the guillotine. The guillotine was first introduced into France during the French Revolution on April 25, 1792. The first execution was that of a highwayman. The guillotine was also used in Scotland, England, and many other European countries. During the French Revolution, there were many important events that led up to the Reign of Terror, during which people were looking for a more efficient means of execution. The revolution in France happened for many reasons. First, France was in a financial crisis; it was on the verge of becoming bankrupt. The country went into debt after helping to finance the Seven Years' War and the Revolutionary War in America. The Wanderer is set during the Reign o f Terror, ex...Second, the people of the middle and lower classes were very unhappy. Third, people were beginning to have new ideas concerning the way the government functioned. King Louis XVI wanted to collect new taxes to pay for France's debts. So, he called his Estates-General to support him in his desire. Of course, the noblemen and clergymen approved, since they were not held responsible to pay the tax. The commoners did have to pay the tax, and they were always outvoted due to the fact that each estate only received a single vote.Angrily, the third estate demanded more votes. After all, they had more members than the first two estates combined. The third estate wanted all three estates to merge into one national assembly. In this new government, each representative would receive a vote. By June of 1789, the commoners had declared...

The Other N-Words
The Other N-Words The Other N-Words The Other N-Words By Mark Nichol My recent post about terms for ethnic groups prompted a note from a site visitor proposing that I write about taboo words. I was not niggardly in my gratitude to the correspondent for his suggestion. Did your eyes just pop out when you read the fourth word in that last sentence? Unlikely, because most DailyWritingTips.com visitors know that niggardly has nothing to do with a similar-sounding offensive term for black people. But many people persist in thinking it does. In the late 1990s, an employee of the Washington, DC, mayorââ¬â¢s office resigned in the aftermath of his innocent use of the word, and a few years later, a schoolteacher came under fire when she included the term in a vocabulary lesson. Another person has noted that he avoids using the word renege around black people, even though it has nothing to do with the derogatory word nigger, derived from Negro. Nor does niggling, but some people argue that such near homophones should be tossed from the word-hoard because somebody, somewhere might be offended. Nitty-gritty, part of the idiomatic expression ââ¬Å"get down to the nitty-gritty,â⬠is a hoary word (oops perhaps I shouldnââ¬â¢t have used that adjective), but itââ¬â¢s also evocative. Unfortunately, some people believe erroneously that it originally referred to the excretory debris left in a slave ship after the cargo had been removed. Evidently, nitty-gritty was in fact originally a synonym for an adjective that rhymes with its component words, but now it is merely synonymous to business in ââ¬Å"get down to business.â⬠What about the original n-word? Did you flinch when I used it above? How dare I type the actual word! Well, itââ¬â¢s in the dictionary, for one thing, and I have a valid reason to use it in this dispassionate, scholarly context. (But I admit Iââ¬â¢d hesitate to use it in front of one or more black people, even if I were reading this post aloud in a group setting.) Should nigger be allowed in print or online? Itââ¬â¢s absurd to dodge it in a neutral context such as a post about usage. How about in literature? Mark Twain used it in Huckleberry Finn to further identify the fugitive slave Jim. Doing so was proper in the historical context of that work, and no one can deny that Twain considered Jim one of his most admirable characters. And anyone who refrains from using it in a valid literary context in a novel about young inner-city blacks who blithely bandy it about, for instance is self-censoring. The word is, admittedly, broadly unacceptable in written and spoken discourse. But should I be prohibited from using it in an essay about derogatory or allegedly derogatory language? Should it be stricken from reprints of Huckleberry Finn, and excuse the expression blacked out in all existing copies? Should a book about the ââ¬â¢hood omit it? The word is used countless times every day all over the United States. Most writers and speakers are justified in using it because they are black, and theyââ¬â¢re taking it back, or because itââ¬â¢s being used in a valid context. Others, racists who use it to denigrate an ethnic group, are also justified because they are exercising a constitutional right to free speech, but that doesnââ¬â¢t mean I like it. Do we even have a right, if weââ¬â¢re not black, to decide whether to use it? It has eminently painful associations for black people, regardless of whether it has been used against them as a weapon. For that reason, Iââ¬â¢m sensitive enough to use it only in this type of context. But I wonââ¬â¢t refrain from using it as such, and I certainly wonââ¬â¢t avoid writing or saying niggardly or niggling under any circumstances. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Nature Versus Nurture, which is responsible for leaders Assignment
Nature Versus Nurture, which is responsible for leaders - Assignment Example In order to understand whether or not leaders are natural born or nurtured into a leader, it is important to understand what exactly defines a leader and what type of traits a leader should posses. A leader can be defined as someone who is able to lead others. To lead others is to conduct plans and implement plans in a way other can easily follow. It is also important for a leader to be able to lead others in a way others will want to follow. Possessing a personality that is favored by many is a necessity for someone to be a leader. A leader is able to lead others into a specific event and lead others in a certain directions. Leaders need to have specific traits. Specific traits a leader should posses would include a strong personality. Strong personalities allow a leader to not easily be manipulated and stay focused. A leader must also possesââ¬â¢ traits that allow him or her to be organized. Being organized shows others that as a leader one is confident and well structured. A leader needs to work well under stress. Being able to work well under stress will allow for a leader to take on large tasks without easily becoming discouraged. The more personable one may be, the more able the leader is to obtain followers. A leader is not a leader unless people are willing to follow with their own free will and not by force or fear. Anyone can lead by fear but a true leader leads by personal choice. Knowing what a leader is and specific traits a leader should posses help to further explore the idea that leaders are both born with specific traits and nurtured by proper upbringing. Intelligence is a perfect example as to how leaders can be born leaders. A leader needs to have a certain level of intelligence in order to lead others. One who is born with a higher level of intelligence is able to learn fast, stay focused and keep up with the demand it takes to lead. It would be hard to lead others if one was lacking necessary skills such as

Contrasting programs and policies related to poverty Research Paper
Contrasting programs and policies related to poverty - Research Paper Example On the other hand, it can be apparently observed that America is still undergoing through a tough phase in tackling its poverty level, which fluctuates on a constant basis (The World Bank Group, 2014). With this concern, the research paper would describe the programs along with the policies associated with poverty that adopt and implement by the countries i.e. the US and China. Moreover, a comparison would also be taken into concern regarding the same in the discussion of the research paper. Prior to contrasting the programs along with the policies associated with poverty between China and the US, a detailed description of these programs as well as policies of both the nations has been provided hereunder. Since the year 1980, the Chinese government has shown significant improvement in declining the poverty rates. The projected poverty rate in China in the year 1980 was estimated 84%, which came down to 13% by the year 2012. The reason contributed in making this terrific improvement is the rise particularly in GDP rates. This can be justified as that the GDP rate rose from 1.89% in the year 1980 to 11.57% in the year 2012, which further resulted towards increase in per capita income by nearly about 30 folds from $205 to $6064 in recent times (The Economic Times, 2013). However, despite the significant success in uplifting the critical concern of poverty, China in the current scenario, is still facing certain issues relating to poverty. In this regard, the increase in the inequality levels and the concentration of the left over poverty populaces in the rural areas are becoming critical concern for the Chinese government (The World Bank Group, 2014). As a corrective measure, China along with ââ¬ËThe International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD)ââ¬â¢ has concentrated their efforts on two vital aspects. One of these is the pilot projects that will be brought under superior technical

Amin Maaloufs Idea Essay Example for Free
Amin Maaloufs Idea Essay My understanding of Amin Maaloufââ¬â¢s concept on identity is that human identity is based on an individualââ¬â¢s environment. He defines identity into two categories. One that is inherited through our elders and cultural beliefs ââ¬Å"verticalâ⬠, and another that exist according to our generational influence, ââ¬Å"horizontalâ⬠. The two categories create our identity as a human and is the source of our behavior. My experience with the vertical heritage is my belief in Christianity. My ancestors and the community I was raised in have traditionally taught me to celebrate religious holidays like Christmas and Easter. I also grew up in a small neighborhood with Christian peers. They have influenced the way I behave and interact by helping to shape my morals. My experience with the ââ¬Å"horizontalâ⬠is the communities I have been introduced to, such as, the public and private school environments. They have broadened my personality with their social aspects. One example of what Maalouf is saying is my switch from public to private school. My personality was much different in public school than it was in private. In my public school the social standard for academic progress was average. The fact that there was no assigned dress code distracted me because I would attempt to impress others with my appearance. This influenced my train of thought, behavior and ultimately my identity, until I was placed into a different setting. When I made the switch to private school the distraction of looking different was taken away, and expectations were higher. My surrounding influenced me again and I became more focused on things that mattered and more questionable of my beliefs. What I gained from both these settings was my horizontal inheritance. For example, the music that I listen to and the hobbies I enjoy. Maaloufââ¬â¢s point is that no matter your vertical, your horizontal has a bigger affect on your identity, and since the horizontal is based on contemporaries, you are based on the subjects around you. He points out that there is a gap between what we think we are and what we actually are in reality. We may know we are different but what we donââ¬â¢t realize is in reality we are only becoming identical through arguing are differences. I believe this is a magnificent insight on identity. Mankind changes the world around us and if we all do the same, we end up in each otherââ¬â¢s world. We are becoming more and more identical to each other through compromise from arguing our differences because we learn to live with each other. When we accept differences they soon become norms, and once they are norms, they become a standard. I agree with Amin Maaloufs concept on identity.

Drinking Water Sustainability Essay -- Potable Water Scarcity
Introduction The importance of water, in relation to the Earth and its inhabitants, can only be rivaled by the importance of oxygen. Living things depend on water in their habitat. However, the abundance of water is not as important as the usefulness of the water. Much of the Earth is made up of this unique liquid combination of hydrogen and oxygen, but the amount that can be used for human consumption is less than one percent (Boland, 2003). In essence, humans use potable water, water that is suitable for drinking and cooking, to satisfy their basic needs. Drinking (potable) water is free from poisonous substances, contaminants, and disease-causing organisms, which would be unsafe for human consumption (Gulflink). In pre-historic times, inhabitants understood the importance of water sustainability for survival of the population. In ancient civilizations, water sustainability and potable water were both emphasized as ideals for the progress and continuity of the societies. Today, humans continue to progress in their understanding and utilization of technological processes to develop potable water. As a result, water filtration, water management, and water conservation efforts are becoming more effective and commonplace. Thus, as the technology continues to improve the quality of water as a resource, we cannot forget the basis to which past cultures had accepted: the continual existence or sustainability of this limited resource. Abstract A Historical Perspective Manââ¬â¢s existence relies on water, and he cannot survive for more than seven days without it. M.N. Goal Write Up
Alex used the concept of ââ¬Å"theory of constraints (TCO)â⬠and new set of measurements and goals with the help of his mentor, Joana, to find constraints or bottlenecks in his plant. Joana defined bottleneck as any resource whose capacity is equal to or less then the demand placed upon it. This paper analyzes Argon's actions in The Goal with respect to the changes and tools that are available today and how the availability of newer tools in the manufacturing area might have affected the choices and priorities on which Ergo is focused. An integrated framework with TCO, Lean, and Six Sigma can maximize Argon's goals after evaluation of his goals, challenges, and application of the present day tools. New Tools Technological and operations management theory developments over the sat three decades provided new tools to Ergo if he faces his choices and priorities today. The most prominent of these are Lean operations, Six-sigma, internet, and various other software tools for operatio ns management effectiveness. ) Lean Operations: Lean operations theory focuses on smooth flow by removing the mud, a Japanese term for waste in the operations processes. Sources of waste are (GAG, 2009): over production, waiting, transportation, inventory, motion, over-processing defects, and not leveraging creativity of the employees. The five principles of Lean thin king are Woman & Jones, 1 996): Specify value from customer point of view, identify steps in the value stream, create smooth flow, customer pulls value, and pursue perfection.Thorough understanding and identification of the various wastes in the operations process can help Ergo to target improvement initiatives. B) Six-sigma: The main objective of Six-sigma DYNAMIC (Define- Measure-Analyze-lampooner-Control) methodology is improving processes and quality through reduction of defects to the extent of 3. 4 defects per million, reduce cycle time, increase throughput, and increase customer satisfaction by educing variation in products and processes, thus giving an organization a competitive advantage (GAG, 2009).Jack Welch emphasizes by calling variation as ââ¬Å"evilâ⬠(III, 2014). ââ¬Å"The methodology looks at a statistical number to determine whether or not to make a change in a company manufacturing processâ⬠(Stephen, 2009). Availability of Six-sigma methodologies would have helped Alex increase throughput while improving the quality and reducing variation in the products and processes. C) Internet and Software: Internet provided many tools for the operations manager over the past two decades. These tools increased efficiencies of the production processes by finding the information in minutes, tracking people, and running complex operations management software on the internet. They range from communications and search engine tools, to the more recent cloud based hosted MM applications on the internet such as customer relationship management SW such as Salesrooms etc. Sophisticated so ftware packages and simulation tools also include enterprise resource planning (ERP) which is an evolved version Of the material resource planning (MR.) that include other departments such as insane and order management packages. These tools would have helped Ergo to find Joana quickly, communicate with him on Keep, and conduct net meetings with divisional headquarters, track inventory and customer orders with ERP rather than the archaic homegrown information system. D) New MM Techniques: There are several new operations management techniques such as just-in-time (KIT) partnership with suppliers, Toyota production system (T AS), total quality management (TXT), supply chain management (SCM), and total productive maintenance (TAMP). . KIT focuses on continuous improvement through continuous and forced problem solving via focus on increasing through put and red icing inventory. KIT partnership between suppliers and purchasers reduce waste and drive down costs by removing unnecessary act ivities, in-plant and in-transit inventory, improve quality and reliability (Hazier & Render, 201 1). Ii. T AS three core components are continuous improvement, respect for people, and standard work practice (Hazier & Render, 201 1). Iii.Although KIT and Six-sigma are key components of the TXT, TXT provides other concepts and tools such as continuous improvement, employee empowerment, bench marking, Attaching concepts, and TXT tools to generate ideas (check sheets, scatter diagram, and cause- and-effect diagram), organizing data (Parent chart and flow chart), and identifying problems (histograms and statistical process control charts) (Hazier & Render, 201 1). Iv. The objective of SCM is to build a sequence of suppliers that focuses on maximizing value to the end customer (Hazier and Render, 2011).SCM process technique takes an integrated approach to procuring, producing, and delivering products and services to customers, veering the management of material, information and financial flows (Venerates, Hachure, & Caulker, 2007). V. TAMP is a manufacturing program designed primarily to maximize equipment life effectiveness through the participation and motivation of the entire work force (Ca, McKeon & Schroeder, 2001 Alex could make good use of these new MM techniques to increase effectiveness of his operations. Argon's Goals and New Tools The goal of any organization in general is to make money.Joana asks Ergo to change his plant measurements to the following measurements that express the goal of making money in a different way. These measurements are throughput, inventory, and operational expense. According to The Goal, definition of throughput is the rate at which the system generates money through sales. Inventory is all the money that the system has invested in purchasing things which the organization intends to sell, and operational expense is all the money the system spends in order to turn inventory into throughput. Then that the real goal of an organizati on is to increase throughput while simultaneously reducing both inventory and operating expense. Joana introduces Ergo to the TCO to help him achieve his goals and loving problems in his plant in terms of the measurements that express the goal of making money. TCO approach includes the following five steps to improve the plant performance: C] Step 1. Identify the system's constraint(s) C] Step 2. Decide how to exploit the system's constraint(s) C] Step 3. Subordinate everything else to exploit the constraint(s) CLC Step 4. Elevate the system's constraint(s) 0 Step 5.If in the previous steps, a constraint has been broken, go back to step 1, but do not allow inertia to cause a system's constraint. TCO primarily focuses on increasing throughput. When the current system constraint or bottleneck is resolved, a new system constraint is then identified creating a continuous cycle, which drives performance improvement forever. Because of this continuous improvement and focus on throughput, Argon's goal will remain the same in light Of the availability of the new tools. Several Of the new tools from these modern concepts can be applied to solve or improve the challenges faced by Ergo in the 1 ass's.New Tools Application to Ale's Challenges Ergo can bring several of the new tools to the challenges he faced at Unaware in the 1 9805. Some of these tools to improve the goals are: a) Lean production ass checklist: sort/segregate, simplify/straighten, shine/sweep, standardize, and sustain/self-discipline. This will help to address waste. B) pull system: This is a standard tool in KIT system to increase throughput and it is used with both suppliers and within the immediate production process (Hazier & Render, 201 1).Pulling the needed materials through the system in very small lots eliminates waste and inventory. C) Continuous Improvement: As a core component of T AS, continuous improvement builds an organization ultra that processes can be improved and that improvement is pa rt of every employee's responsibility (Hazier & Render, 201 1 Kamikaze is the formal process for this component believing that perfection is achieved through many incremental changes. Operations manager plays a key role in building kamikaze culture. ) Respecting and empowering people: TIPS empowers employees to stop process or machines when quality problems surface. TIPS respects employees by empowering them to enrich their jobs and lives. E) Scheduling: KIT scheduling tactics include communicate schedules to appliers, eliminate waste, produce in small lots, use Kansas, and make each operation produce perfect part. F) Inventory Management Systems: Ergo can establish these systems using BBC classification of all types of inventory and maintaining accurate records of the inventory. G) Forecasting: Forecasting demand has been a challenge for Ergo.He can make use of qualitative methods such as Delphi method as well as qualitative methods such as time- series forecasting to predict the d emand. Demand forecasts impacts plant capacity, human resources, and SCM (Hazier & Render, 201 1). Integrated Framework of TCO, Lean, and Six-Sigma Ergo and his team had to work with long established archaic management processes in the sass's setting. If The Goal were set in 2014, Ergo and his team would likely find management more willing to embark on a process of ongoing improvement including the new methodologies such as Lean and Six-sigma.However, these methodologies are not competing strategies, as each has significant value and applied differently with an integrated framework comprising of TCO, Lean, and Six-sigma. Ergo can make use of this integrated framework to maximize his goals. The integrated framework uses the synergy of TCO, Lean, and Six-Sigma to consistently achieve a concentrated system improvement beyond what might be accomplished by applying each method individually with a traditional continuous process improvement approach. The most efficient way to integrate TCO , Lean, and Six-Sigma starts with strategy as a first step (GAG, 2009).The strategy provides the strategic roadman to improve business performance. The strategic roadman provides the direction for the areas of the organization that maximizes benefit for the total system by applying improvements first. This continuous business success framework has two major parts: the constraint based system architecture and the TCO-Lean-Six-Sigma based continuous improvement architecture. A) Strategy- the output of a good strategy is a clear, agreed upon, roadman to improve business results. The focus is on optimizing the performance of the total system versus improving the individual functions in isolation. B) Design: This step determines the correct alignment of the business processes including changing any policies, measurements, roles and responsibilities, and information systems. C) Activate: During this step, the newly defined business processes are implemented. D) Improve: Improvements are ev aluated based on their ability to increase throughput, and to reduce inventory and operating expense and improve overall system performance. Jacob, Berglund & Cox 2009). Key performance indicators (Kepi's) are used to identify gaps between present and desired performance levels. Some useful improve techniques include AS system, TAMP, point of use storage (POLIS), Mistake proofing (Poke yoke), SSP, Capability Studies, Design of Experiments, etc. E) Sustain: As for the last step, Ergo should continuously review key measurement results to assess, address and institutionalize the policies, measurements and behaviors to guarantee that the results are sustained and do not degrade.Ergo can utilize the full integration of TCO, Lean and Six Sigma in order to obtain focused system improvement that achieves real, sustainable breakthrough performance. Although internet and internet based tools and sophisticated software packages certainly improve Argon's operations, they will not have direct im pact on the choices and priorities that Ergo has focused. With respect to the other lolls to help Ergo, the principles and techniques of KIT can be shifted to an entire SCM to strengthen Argon's SCM strategy in pursuit of improved organizational performance.

Philosophy â⬠Justice Essay
In most of the ancient world, strong fighters won all the glory. But in Athens, great thinkers and wise men were honored. People listened to them and followed their advice. Even today, people admire the ideas of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Their teachings are at the root of modern philosophy and science. Alfred Whitehead is quoted as saying: ââ¬Å"The safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato. â⬠If you really know how to read Plato, the truth behind this statement is easy to see. Nearly every great philosophical idea was discussed by Plato to some extent. The best way to put it is the way the Stanford Encyclopedia puts it: ââ¬Å"Few other authors in the history of philosophy approximate him in depth and range. â⬠A great example would be his theory of justice, the present day definition of justice is ââ¬Å"a scheme or system of law in which every person receives his/her/its due from the system, including all rights, both natural and legal. â⬠This definition dates back to Plato, Oneââ¬â¢s search for the meaning of justice in Platos ââ¬Å"Republicâ⬠would finally lead to two definitions : -Justice is Harmony. (Plato, Republic, Book 4, section 443b) ââ¬â Justice is doing oneââ¬â¢s own job. ( Plato, Republic, Book 4, section 443b) However finding these definitions is hardly enough to define justice, so Plato went further and offered two analogies to get a clear sense of what justice is, ââ¬Å"the division of parts in the soul as well as the parts of the stateâ⬠, the soul (nature) being personal morals and the state (legal) being societal morals. Another would be his theory of human nature, he believed we were rational, social animals. Plato tended to identify our nature with reason, and our souls, as opposed to our bodies. He believed that who we are depends on what kind of a soul we haveââ¬âa philosopher soul, a guardian or warrior soul, or an artisan soul. This is the general role we should play in society (Theory of self). Success or failure at life depends upon what sort of society we live in. Human life needs to be political for Plato, spent in the discovery of the proper manner in which sociality ought to be organized, and then in the practical implementation of that ideal in our own societies. We are rational and social creatures, but we become who we are in society. In order to become what we truly are, we must live in the true (or ideal) society. Essence is grasped by rational analysis, as it is separate from change. This is yet another theory that according to my view of the world defines human nature, defines who we are as a people and what is required.

Mayfield High Statistics I am going to investigate how your weight affects your lifestyle Essay Example
Mayfield High Statistics I am going to investigate how your weight affects your lifestyle Essay Example Mayfield High Statistics I am going to investigate how your weight affects your lifestyle Essay Mayfield High Statistics I am going to investigate how your weight affects your lifestyle Essay Hypothesis I am going to investigate how your weight affects your lifestyle. This is my chosen investigation because I think it will be interesting to find out if your weight changes depending on which activities you undertake in your everyday life. I am going to first see if there is a difference in weights of males and females. Then find out if your favourite sport has an effect on your weight or not. Then I am going to find out whether the number of hours you spend watching T.V have an affect on your weight. And finally, I will find out whether the means of transport you use to get to and from school have an affect on your weight. But by looking into only weight, I will not be able to compare years as age affects weight, so instead I will be looking at their BMI (body mass index). I am going to see whether: * Your gender has an affect on your BMI I think that males weigh more then females because they stop growing at a later age the females. Females go through puberty earlier then males and therefore stop growing earlier then males. Therefore, I think that males will have higher BMI then females who weigh less. * Your favourite sport has an affect on your BMI I predict that the more active your favourite sport is, the less you weigh because you burn more calories therefore less BMI. The less active your favourite sport is the more you weigh as less calories are burnt, therefore more BMI. * The number of hours spent watching T.V has an affect on your BMI The more average number of hours spent watching TV, the more you weigh because you dont need much energy to watch TV so less calories are burnt, therefore more BMI. The less number of hours you spend watching TV in a week the less you weigh, therefore less BMI. * The means of transport used has an affect on your BMI The more active yours means of transport the less you weigh. So if you walk to school you weigh less then those who get driven to school and these people will have a lower BMI. Therefore the less active yours means of transport the more you weigh, therefore high BMI. To find these relationships I am going to need a sample of pupils whose information I can use and compare. To choose which pupils information I am going to use, I will use a sampling method. This will be less time consuming because I will not have to find out about all the pupils and just the ones that have been chosen. I will take a sample of 8% of the total amount of in year 7, 8, 9 and 10. I will 1st choose a sampling method. -Random sampling ~ this where you just select individuals at random, each member of the population has an equal chance of being chosen. It is used when you have no information about the characteristics of the population. This method should be repeated a number of times to ensure that the method is random and accurate. This method would not be appropriate, because if the pupils are chosen at random, the chosen pupils may not be representative for their whole year. It may have only 2 pupils chosen from year 8 and 15 chosen from year 10, and this would not be representative. This method would also mean that my chosen sample may not be in proportion to the amount of pupils in each year or the amount of males and females in each year. -Systematic sampling ~ this is where you have a population and you select every nth person after the first person, n is chosen at random. This method is also unsuitable to choose my sample, because again the chosen sample may not be representative of their year and it may also not be in proportion to their year and other years. -Convenience sampling ~ this is where you pick lets say the 1st 50 people you meet, if you want a sample size of 50 peoples. It is a convenient form of sampling if you do not already have a population. This would not work for choosing my sample as I already have a population from which to choose the sample from, and this form of selecting a sample can be biased and unrepresentative. -Quota sampling ~ this is where you pick a sample which as far as possible reflects the whole population by having the same proportion of lets say males/females or adults/children etc. This could be used for choosing my sample, however, I have to consider the proportionalities of year groups as well as genders and so this method would not really work. -Stratified sampling ~ this is when the population is divided into groups which have something in common e.g. age. A random sample is then taken from each group. The number in each sample is proportional to the group. This method is appropriate for choosing my sample because I will be able to have the chosen sample in proportion with year group and gender. This will mean that I will have a representative number of pupils from each year, and these pupils will be of different genders depending on the amount of males and females in that year. Therefore, I will be using this method to pick out my sample group. Count of Forename Year Group Gender 7 8 9 10 11 Grand Total Female 131 125 143 94 84 577 Male 151 145 117 106 84 603 Grand Total 282 270 260 200 168 1180 I am going to be having a sample size of 10% of the total given population. This amount, I think, will give a representative number of pupils from each year and a representative number of males and females from each year. It is important for me to have a representative sample for the population so that my end results are not biased, so when I come to compare the results they are fair and correct. Sample size = 1180 ? 10 = 118 100 I will be using the stratified sampling method. To find my sample I will be using this formula: No. of pupils in each year ? sample size Total no. of pupils in all years I will now find out how many pupils need to be chosen from each year using this formula. Year 7 = 282 ? 118 = 28.2 = 28 1180 Year 8 = 270 ? 118 = 27 1180 Year 9 = 260 ? 118 = 26 1180 Year 10 = 200 ? 118 = 20 1180 Year 11 = 168 ? 118 = 16 1180 I am now going to find out how many males and females need to be chosen from each year so that my chosen sample is representative of the males and females in each year. To find out how many males and females I need in my sample group I am going to use this formula: Total number of males/females in each year ? the amount of pupils to be chosen from Total number of pupils on that year that year Pupils to be chosen from year 7 = Females = 131 ? 28 = 13 282 Males = 151 ? 27 = 15 282 Pupils to be chosen from year 8 = Females = 125 ? 27 = 12.5 = 13 270 Males = 145 ? 27 = 14.5 = 14 270 Pupils to be chosen from year 9 = Females = 143 ? 26 = 14.3 = 14 260 Males = 117 ? 26 = 11.7 = 12 260 Pupils to be chosen from year 10 = Females = 94 ? 20 = 9.4 = 9 200 Males = 106 ? 20 = 10.6 = 11 200 Pupils to be chosen from year 11 = Females = 84 ? 16 = 8 168 Males = 84 ? 16 = 8 168 I am now going to randomly select this amount of males and females from each year. I will do this by giving each pupil a number, and then using the random button on the calculator, I can randomly pick pupils corresponding to that number. As I am going to compare the factors to the BMI, will need to work out the BMI using this formula: BMI = weight(kg) hieghtà ¯Ã ¿Ã ½(m) BMI calculates body fat according to the relationship of weight and height. A BMI of 20-25 is viewed as normal, higher then this is over weight and lower then this is under weight. BMI is particularly helpful for identifying children and adolescents who are at risk for being overweight as they get older. In older children and teens, there is a strong correlation between BMI and the amount of body fat. Therefore, those with high BMI readings, and probably high levels of fat, are most likely to have weight problems when they are older. I will be investigating each prediction by drawing out some of the followings to help me obtain some results that I can compare and support my predictions by: Frequency polygons ~ these are used to show the trend of the results obtained from continuous data. You join the mid-points of the class intervals and I can then see the value that is at the highest peak of the trend line, this would be the modal value/class. It will also be clearer to see where the results increase or decrease, and I can then see if there is a noticeable trend. I could compare the frequency polygons and see who has the lowest BMIs and who has the highest BMIs. Line graphs ~ these are also used to show the trend of the results. I can use this to show the increase or decrease of BMIs relating to different factors that may affect it. Box and whisker diagrams ~ box and whisker diagrams will highlight the quartiles and extreme values of my obtained set of data, showing me where most of the BMI values lie. The positioning of the median will tell me whether the data is positively skewed or negatively skewed. This is useful for my work as it can tell me whether most of the data is at the higher BMI values or at the lower BMI values. Box and whisker diagrams are also easier to compare which is very important for my work. Cumulative frequency graphs ~ drawing cumulative frequency graphs help to show the spread of grouped data and to find the median BMIs. I am also going to use the cumulative frequency graphs to show the interquartile ranges. This will show whether the data on each graph is widely spread about the median, which will mean that theres a variety of BMIs, or concentrated about the median, which will show that the BMIs are of similar amounts. I will be working out the: Median (middle value), form the cumulative frequency graphs to see the skewness of the data. mean so that I can compare different averages, to see which BMI value is higher or lower between 2 sets of data Working out the mean will then help me work out the standard deviation. Standard deviation will show the spread and dispersion of my data. This again will just help me compare how similar the BMIs are of 2 sets of data. Modal classes, this will show me which class of BMI contains the most number of pupils. I can see which modal class is higher and can then find out who has a higher BMI value, by comparing them. I am now going to start to investigate each of my hypotheses: * Your gender has an affect on your BMI I am going to be drawing cumulative frequency graphs, box and whisker diagrams, frequency polygons, and find the standard deviation, mean, mode and quartile ranges. I can then compare each of these graphs for males and females and see the variation and difference between the BMIs. These box and whisker diagram is for the males and females and shows their BMI range. The box and whisker diagram for males shows that the median value is closest to the upper quartile value, and therefore this data is negatively skewed. This means that most of the data is at the higher values, which shows that the males have a higher BMI. The box and whisker diagram for females. For this, the median is closest to the lower quartile value. This means that it is positively skewed, and most of the data is at the lower values, which means that the females BM values are low. This supports my predictions.

Chinese Head Tax and the Chinese Exclusion Act in Canada
Chinese Head Tax and the Chinese Exclusion Act in Canada The first large influx of Chinese immigrants to stay in Canada came north from San Francisco following the gold rush to the Fraser River Valley in 1858. In the 1860s many moved on to prospect for gold in the Cariboo Mountains of British Columbia. When workers were needed for the Canadian Pacific Railway, many were brought directly from China. From 1880 to 1885 about 17,000 Chinese laborers helped build the difficult and dangerous British Columbia section of the railway. In spite of their contributions, there was a great deal of prejudice against the Chinese, and they were paid only half the wage of white workers. Chinese Immigration Act and the Chinese Head Tax When the railway was finished and cheap labor in large numbers was no longer needed, there was a backlash from union workers and some politicians against the Chinese. After a Royal Commission on Chinese Immigration, the Canadian federal government passed the Chinese Immigration Act in 1885, putting a head tax of $50 on Chinese immigrants in the hopes of discouraging them from entering Canada. In 1900 the head tax was increased to $100. In 1903 the head tax went up to $500, which was about two years pay. The Canadian federal government collected about $23 million from the Chinese head tax. In the early 1900s, prejudice against Chinese and Japanese was further exacerbated when they were used as strikebreakers at coal mines in British Columbia. An economic slump in Vancouver set the stage for a full-scale riot in 1907. Leaders of the Asiatic Exclusion League stirred a parade into a frenzy of 8000 men looting and burning their way through Chinatown. With the outbreak of World War I, Chinese labor was needed in Canada again. In the last two years of the war, the number of Chinese immigrants increased to 4000 a year. When the war ended and soldiers returned to Canada looking for work, there was another backlash against the Chinese. It wasnt just the increase in numbers that caused alarm, but also the fact that the Chinese had moved into owning land and farms. The economic recession in the early 1920s added to the resentment. Canadian Chinese Exclusion Act In 1923, Canada passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, which in effect stopped Chinese immigration to Canada for nearly a quarter of a century. July 1, 1923, the day the Canadian Chinese Exclusion Act came into effect, is known as humiliation day. The Chinese population in Canada went from 46,500 in 1931 to about 32,500 in 1951. The Chinese Exclusion Act was in effect until 1947. In that same year, Chinese Canadians regained the right to vote in Canadian federal elections. It wasnt until 1967 that the final elements of the Chinese Exclusion Act were completely eliminated. Canadian Government Apologizes for Chinese Head Tax On June 22, 2006, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper made a speech in the House of Commons giving a formal apology for the use of a head tax and the exclusion of Chinese immigrants to Canada.

Hollywood cinema Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Hollywood cinema - Essay Example Yet all these are shallow representations of what genre really is. Studying about film genre is not about labeling the films as such. Genre, to the film maker, means the elements on which a film is based, which includes thoughts, ideas and realizations. This paper aims to tackle a thorough understanding on what film genre really is and how it has affected Hollywood Cinema for the past years. The word ââ¬Å"genreâ⬠originated from France and originally meant ââ¬Å"class or kindâ⬠. Initially, in the older days, it was used to differentiate various works of literature such as prose, drama or poetry. Later on, Shakespeare began to add subcategories such as tragedy and comedy. In the early 1950s, the word genre began to be associated with various classifications of film. The usage of this word continued on to the 1970s wherein there were more films being produced in Hollywood. As of now, there are numerous film genres that we see at movie houses and stores, indicating that indeed cinema have broadened over the past years. At present, genre is not just a word used to classify films. Filmmakers and artists now look at genre as a type of style or subject matter. These people delve deep into the events, ideas and thoughts that lead to the conceptualization of the film. Was there a difference in the creation of film as to style and theme over the years? It is not easy to brand a film by its genre. Genre, in itself, is a vague term. Most of us nowadays classify films as to its subject matter and suitability. Yet, there is a question as to whether the idea of film genre will always remain as such. It is not indeed easy to brand a film as to whether it is just a comedy, a drama or action film. Most films are mixed, i.e. they may be romantic comedies or action-drama. Yet, as vague as it is, it is essential for us that we know the basic elements of film genre. A filmmaker needs to know the elements of a particular genre because it is with these elements

Economy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Economy - Essay Example The liquidity crunch was the effect of fall in production due to the global financial crisis. Due to the debt crisis, there was shortage of liquidity for which the employment level was affected for which the income level of the people was reduced (Allen, 1999, p.35). Due to fall in the income level and availability of funds, the spending of the people was also lowered. A lower level of spending gave rise to fall in demand in the economy and the sale of products and services also shattered for the companies. The decrease in sale of products and services led to increase in inventory and the revenue earned by the companies and their profitability were lowered. This forced the businesses to reduce their total productive capacities as a result of which the total goods and services in Europe was lowered. Thus the gross domestic product of the European Union was lowered with the European national producing goods and services at a much lesser volume. The reduction in the GDP of the European economy again fuelled the lowering of income levels, subsequent spending and further production in the economy. This could be explained from the circular flow of income as given below. The output produced by the firms determines the productivity level in the economy. This output is determined by the expenditures or the level of spending of the households. The level of spending of the household again depends on the income levels. This income level is determined according to the payments of wages by the firms to their employees who are the household earners. The payment is done for receipt of services required for production of goods. Thus all the above activities in the economy are linked by a circular flow of income. The flow of money in the economy is also contributed by the net government spending. The net government spending is the difference between actual amount spent by the government and the amount earned by the government through levy of taxes. Due to fall in demand of the e conomy, the government spending also reduced in order to maintain a balance with the tax income. The tax income is lowered as there is a fall in the income level of the population. The governments of European Union designed appropriate monetary and fiscal policies to rescue the economy from the staged of recession (Mishkin, 2007, p.25). The interest rates were revised and subsidies were received to boost the income level and production of the economy. Due to the fall in demand in the economy, the net exports also suffered due to reduction in productive capacities which affected the balance of payments and the foreign exchange earnings. This created an impact on the currency conversion rates of Euro. Consequences of drop in demand for Fitnesse Due to the drop in demand in the economy and reduction in spending of the people, the business and profitability of Fitnesse have shown signs of vulnerability. Fitnesse is a centre for recreation and sporting activities that provides excellent infrastructural facilities to its members and also organises tournaments on squash and lifestyle sessions. The centre provides personal fitness training facilities, swimming pool, gymnasiums, body massage and maintenance facilities, restaurants and bars for health and recreation. These
